One of the very basics of web site traffic generating is having some clue of what search engines are bringing you traffic and how to maximize that with search engine placement for highly searched terms. All that is cool and fun for a while but a better observation for bloggers is to consider what site should I place my primary focus.
It’s funny how some bloggers often try everything but what works. So for me let’s brake down real quick what does work.
One Facebook to me is a complete waste of time. I joined when everyone did and put a lot of (wasted) hard work into building up some connections on there. I look at Facebook like a Minor League Farm club full with rookies and social misfits, if Facebook closed tomorrow I wouldn’t miss a beat.To me it’s a way to message and find people from the 80′s and not much more. If I was looking for a long lost friend I would go there but not for much else. I do passed through Facebook every few days now when I get an email from someone other then that I really think Facebook is a cemetery.

Google is a GOOF when it comes to anything worth checking out I don’t like wave and wasn’t impressed with Buzz and don’t know what Google Moderator was all about. You would think with BILLIONS of revenue a year and 19.000 people working there they would have some awesome social network. I really don’t care what google does. I see they shit on bloggers and the whole point of this post is to utilize your time more efficiently.
Twitter to me and apparently to everyone I know online is the spot. I can message my friends QUICK I just don’t understand why Twitter doesn’t jack something from Facebook and the damn @ working like on Facebook, it’s frustrating on twitter not to be able to @ and bring up JOE or whoever once they get that it’s a lock.
Twitter is way beyond a message center and will probably be some core communications network, they need to get hip to avoid all the outages but can you imagine how many tweets pop a day from all over the world every second of the day.
So as a Blogger where are you spending most of your time. Even traffic stats tell me that TWITTER is KING when it comes to getting instant traffic. I could tweet and see 15 people on my blog not bad for a click. Anyway what are your thoughts? Are you still bouncing all over seeing what is best STILL or are you committed to a certain site for search and communication ?
Thanks
PS to be honest if your a blogger BLOGGER LUV is better then all of them for what a blogger needs but that’s another post

I think the trick with Facebook is to have people who have huge influence there promote you. I just had one of my posts promoted by a friend who had 3,800 friends, and the traffic wasn’t insubstantial. Likewise, another time a friend who had 1,000 friends promoted me, I got some pretty nice directed traffic through it.
So my thought with Facebook is this: it may not help with keywords as much as some other things. But if you get a large following yourself – if you’re looking at 600 friends or something – it might be worth putting the time in to make that a larger following and one that may be more interested in your work.

Hey John,
I think they are all a bit to different to be compared.
Twitter is crap for traffic in my experience, facebook is no better, google is irrelevant because for them you have to “fit”… you have to manipulate shit to get anywhere with them, sod that…
I don’t care about any of them anymore, all crap!

My opinion of both is up in the air. I prefer Twitter. I guess I don’t promote my Facebook page enough…I can’t say I have put enough effort into it in order to judge it. I spend much more time on Twitter these days. There just aren’t enough hours in a day to do everything I would like to, so I do what I can and don’t worry about it.

Hi John,
I think I don’t do tweeting much due to some of spams coming in there…but facebook seems cool though but maybe i need to try twitter more to see how it goes.
Thanks for sharing.

You know .. I see you on Facebook all the time #BloggerLuv and if you use GMAIL anyway, you’re practically in BUZZ anyway … and all your posts can be sent directly to both twitter and facebook simultaneously
There’s a little distraction though with BUZZ. I’m following a few really popular buzz’ers who gets about 100 comments per buzz and usually buzzes about 5-10 times a day. If you comment on one of them, your inbox gets flooded everytime someone else comments too (although, i think there is an option box to untick for that somewhere hmm)

Unless you’re a college student, Facebook is a joke!
I’m not a big fan of twitter but since I don’t have a blog and don’t update my web site often, its irrelevant (to me).
Finally, let’s talk Google. If you have a static web site (like mine) — you can’t go wrong with the Organic SERP. I don’t use Ad-Words, Ad Sense, or any other of those Google paid services.
Yeah, web designers have talked to me about that – static web pages are much more in fashion with search engines than blogs. Blogs have exploded, and it is very difficult for a search engine to tell which ones are good and which ones are bad.

Wow Jon I really need to read your blog more! I have so much to learn about all the tweeting and how FB can drive traffic , I am such a newbie at this stuff
John can certainly help with a number of those issues. My two cents about Facebook are above – if you have a large following there, that can be used to your advantage.
I confess I know next to nothing about tweeting, except that it isn’t too hard to find good twitter friends if you use the hashtags, and with that small community getting linked back to shouldn’t be too hard (yes, I’ve done this before. I stopped because Twitter got uber-annoying),

I use both twitter and Facebook but I’ve had both of these accounts for less than 30 days so I’m not sure which will produce better results. I use WordPress to publish my blog and downloaded 2 separate plugins that automatically update both twitter and Facebook for me every time I post. That feature makes having both accounts hassle free.

I might be wrong, but my own guess is that it is probably to build a network with both Twitter and Facebook before doing considerable promotion. Of course you should have a link to your site, and maybe something about what you do in your profile, but it’s really the numbers of engaged users willing to spread your message that make both Twitter and Facebook worthwhile.
On either network, it depends who wants to talk to you.

John, you got it right. Facebook is a waste of time unless you are looking to gossip and troll. For me its about cost/benefit. The cost of Facebook (time wise) is high and the benefit is low. I maintain a Facebook account to keep up with my real friends. I do aggregate my Blog content via RSS to my Wall and I pick up a few clicks here and there.
A blog post that scores high in organic search will gain 100 visitors a day. That same post on Facebook might gain 100 visitors for the life. The math is easy to work out.

John, great article I don’t promote Facebook at all. I guess I should, but I haven’t done it. Perhaps I’ll eventually get around to making another Facebook account that’s not associated with my personal one. That’s mainly for family, and friends that have found me from the 80′s, heh. now granted I wish some of those folks never found me, which might explain why I’m rarely on my personal FB page anymore.
Twitter I like, but need to read about more, I mainly use it to promote my friends stuff. I rarely use it to promote my own things, silly I know but I always feel odd linking to my own things.
The past few years I took a break from personal blogging and just focused on my niche websites. Initially I was disappointed, because I felt so many people that were all about the links and not by the folks behind the blog. However, that changed when discovered BloggerLuv and SITS. To be honest I spend a heck of a lot more time at BloggerLUV though, simply because I like the sense of community.
I’m a new member to BloggerLuv, but am really enjoying the sense of community I’m experiencing there. For myself, that’s what blogging is about. Recognizing there are real people behind those blogs, treating them respectfully, and wanting to get to know the blogger behind the blog.
Sorry for the ramble…

I feel FB is better. Facebook allows you to set up a personal profile, a professional profile, a business page or a fan page. You have all kinds of choices for putting yourself and your business in front of your customers. People like to feel part of a business. You can enable that by setting up a fan page for your business or for a unique product that you offer.
Google is still number one . I think that
