Link selling Google and Hypocrisy

I'm watching YOU GOOGLE LOL :)

Today on twitter I asked @MattCutts why does google let sites like PR WEB sell links and remain a PR7 ?

I immediately got a tweet from PRweb directing me to read some lame page stating they don’t SELL LINKS. Ok let’s say you call me and say John I will give you 80 bucks to write about me or they do it and add some links that are followed in the post and I said YES did I just sell you links ? Yes sir I did.

Now to take it one step further why would a person pay $80 dollars to a site for a POST aka Press Release, come on why else would they do it because they just bought some page rank and no doubt if I had paid the 80 bucks this site would be a PR 5. See I don’t mind and quite the opposite. I was thinking about how wrong I was to see another blogging friend always doing sponsored posts. I like most people thought he would be digging his own grave. Well when your a small guy like US Google will bitch smack you with a PR 0 and maybe even de index you.

Not if your the big boys. Google let’s their buddies sell links, sell followed affiliate links basically whatever you want and they aren’t going to do a damn thing about it. Sites that big gets special treatment I guess because Google needs their crap in their index or maybe Google doesn’t want to get sued by multi million dollar sites because that would be what happen if Google decided to play on an even playing field.

Recently after the recent Google Page Rank update many bloggers were like fuck page rank, even ones that were treated fairly. I just try to see any mistakes I made and make certain adjustments. Bloggers have to fight for page rank whereas big sites are anchored deep in their PR. Google also is the biggest seller of links on the internet but they keep the fear of God in Bloggers to never do so. Really ? I doubt that because I see plenty of sites selling links in fact I think if I didn’t play by the rules this site would be better off. Say I’m loosing a few hundred a month in selling links and posts and whatever else. I (WE) loose out while the big boys keep banking.

Do you see a PR revolt anytime soon where bloggers remove the Google Toolbar and start cashing in anyway they want ?

I’m not going to answer or ask if you ever sold links but have you ever bought PR ?

To date I never spent a penny on advertising or any promotion for this site.

Do you think you and your blog could survive without google ?

I think I would be fine because I would be free to do exactly what I want :)

Thanks for stopping by.

Google is my second highest traffic source, so while I could survive without Google, it wouldn’t be as good.

That is kind of a good point about press release sites though… most of them you can use for free, but if you want to add links, you have to pay, so in a roundabout way it is kind of like paying someone to give you links. They just add extra “bonuses” like distributing your newly linked release to more sites and making them SEO friendly.

“Do you think you and your blog could survive without google ?”
Unfortunately, no :( about 70% of my traffic comes from Google)

I normally just copy paste the press releases to my posts with the links without additional payments :( Guess I’m being too generous lol

I have never paid for links but I have a lot of sites that I do accept money for links. I sell hundreds of dollars of links per month via Digital Point. I try to keep my main blog Tycoon Blogger free for link sales but I do write a couple of sponsored posts when the price is right.

This is certainly a topic of debate. Surviving without Google is not impossible but surely difficult. It does become a source of majority of traffic. This entire situation of page ranking , at times, seems frustrating. What say?

I’m going to say yes, even though I have no idea. The reason being, I rarely check stats…I have no idea how much search traffic I get. lol

You raise a good point though. I don’t think many people, including myself, think of review posts with links as “selling links”. To be honest, I don’t think Google does either, though I could be wrong.

Clarification: I’m referring to private sales (you pay me to review your blog), not the PayPerPost type reviews which Google slapped

I do know, when the first slap happened, as well as consequent slaps, they were slapping OBVIOUSLY BLATANT sidebar link sales and link pages and reviews through the review sites as mentioned above.

I guess even privately paid reviews is also link selling?

I tend to agree to a point. While Google seems to have a tight hold on much of what happens on the ‘Net they are not the only player. If they were to suddenly disappear Bing, Ask, etc. would be right there to fill the gap.
