Are we obligated to help new bloggers ?

by John Sullivan on March 13, 2010 · 54 comments

in bloggers, blogging, blogging tips

On the eve of POTPOLITICS second birthday the BIG question for me today is what do I owe back to blogging and am I obligated to help new bloggers ? My Answer is I owe everything back to blogging and Yes I’m definitely obligated to other bloggers not just the new ones. Not to be negative but when I was new no one really helped me nor did they give a fuck short of one or two people that I’m still friends with today. The real point is that bloggers are dysfunctional in that they want from people but often don’t give back and do all kinds of counterproductive things.
Such as when you ask someone for help don’t make it difficult for them to help you. I will often be asked to help someone make money and then I may say call me I have some ideas for you, then the person comes back with the phone service was down on my planet or something like that :) See if you come into my view I may think about you and if I like you I may even come to care about you and when you do things that I don’t understand it just makes me wonder what the hell your thinking and I would much rather operate on an easier plane. Such as you ask me a question I answer and vice versa.

So what was the prize ?

There’s a lady that I have been ducking for the last few days because she wants to move off blogspot to wordpress and I had to wait to tell her she’s won. I was going to have a corny contest like you see on some “desperate” just kidding blogs and announce the winner on this blog’s 2 year anniversary.
The prize is that after talking with the person I would order a domain name and add a customized wordpress install. Now days when you hire people to build you a site right after they get your cash your left hanging with excuses and GHOST. So I wanted to counter that with a free domain, free hosting and private registration for the person to be paid by this blog for LIFE. So I will let her know today and also today I’m going to take you inside this blog. I will show you all the things I use behind this blog, mention what works and what makes my life MUCH easier.

Am I my Brother’s Keeper ? YES

So how much do you think bloggers that have been around for a while owe back to blogging ? It saddens me that in blogging you have some creeps charging 50 bucks a question to suckers and bloggers that intentionally do things to HURT other bloggers. I really believe in karma and I know you get back what you put out, is your hand out ? Are you concerned about the success of others or is it all about you ?
The day blogging is no longer fun and I don’t feel like I’m helping at least one person I will Quit.

Thanks so much everyone please come by tomorrow to help me celebrate on March 14th :)

Double LOL

Hi John, I see you are in a great mood this morning. I’m really glad you mentioned this topic. I’m making it my goal for 2010 (and beyond) to help other bloggers, and since I’m pretty new to blogging that means I gotta learn a lot real quick in order to pass on the knowledge. That’s why I hang around your blog trying pick up as much as I can and I love the way to run this blog.

If there is anything I can do to help you, please let me know because newbies aren’t the only ones that need help. Sometime pros like you need help too.

Thanks for your encouragement and support. I hope that blogger takes you up on the offer and reaps some financial benefits too!

Cheers!

@Ileane Hi and Thanks. I decided to pass on a contest and been playing dumb with Kissie because I was trying to write about it on March 14th but because she lives a busy life and what I can do pretty easy I decided to order her a domain after we talk make her a sweet site and then make sure it’s successful. All she will have to do is log in and write. She will own it and none of my ads or links will be on the site. I will host it and pay for the domain to be re registered for LIFE. Thanks so much for your friendship and support :)

Its good to see established bloggers reaching out to help us new starts, even if its just with a little advice or a partr and tip here and there. I agree there is too much of the “sign up here for our 10 week expensive course to see how you too can be a bloggger” going on but thats just part and parcel of the web today.

Thx

Brother you absolutely have to help people starting out, I approach my site like a military operation, help those below you to do your job, it forces you to learn the next rank above and then in turn you can teach the people a rank or two below that job and so on.

Another thing I live by is to help as many people on the way up, because they will catch you when you fall, and you will fall at some point. The more people you have helped, the less distance you wil travel when you lose your grip.

So there you have it brother, personally I think what you are doing here and your work ethic is incredible.

You like Allyn are completly vital to this industry.

I told you I’m not the comment person John. Haha. But this post just made me look for the comment box right away.

I salute your efforts. And you’re right. When the day comes that blogging isn’t fun anymore and I can’t help out someone, then I’d quite too. ;)

Advance happy 2nd anniversary to your blog. This just reminds me, I’m near my 3rd! I’m technically older by blogging years. Arg. I hate the word old. LOL

Hmmm, you had me at hello when I read: “There’s a lady that I have been ducking for the last few days because she wants to move off blogspot to wordpress and I had to wait to tell her she’s won. ”

I have to say that @Ileane has been absolutely wonderful in this area. She’s the one who encouraged me to start blogging. Since I love to write she thought blogging would be an avenue to make me finish my “novel” I started more than three years ago. So, I just had my one year birthday in February….well, I started the page in February but I started writing consistently (if that’s what you wanna call it) in July.

Okay, let me move on and continue to be ignored by John. Keep ducking!

Happy Anniversary!

Well Young Lady I skipped a contest so I could give you a beautiful site to enjoy and do all your work. Let me mention somethings that come with the site I didn’t add. Unlimited Bandwidth Unlimited Bookmarking by ME :) Unlimited questions you will have answered. I’m going to be in the back round encouraging and making suggestions. I’m going to guide your site as it grows and make sure you never have to worry about links, page rank or anything. Just sign in and write. I will call you TODAY about what name you want and order it today and it will be ready. Sometimes it takes a few hours once I put my order in but it alerts me, Once that happens I will add wordpress a theme /design u like all the plugins and codes submit it to everywhere and ………. Your phone will ring soon answer it :P
Thanks everyone so much for letting me feel like all my lonely days in blogging are over :) and your great comments/ feedback

I remember that song from 4-Non-Blondes … one-hit wonder .. “what’s up” then fizzle.

But – it’s nice not to fizzle around the internet and remember that everybody’s a newbie once and it’s good to help. I know if I can help (or give my 2 cents :P ) in the forums and such, I will do that. Some other people were more like .. “here’s how to // no wait, read about it on my blog instead” … and I probably lost a lot of potential blog posts in the past, but that wasn’t what it was all about for me.

Nice thing you’re doing with that domain and template thingie John!

A suggestion to Kissie however .. I had MidPhase register a domain for life for me – and I’ve been trying for years to get it under my control. When I upgraded servers .. and needed to change my nameservers, my sites were down for about 4 days before I was able to resolve. I would suggest a domain transfer and donation to the PotLuck fund :) once the site is a success (and make that a subscription lol)

Let me clarify I pay by the year and have it set up to be registered privately every year that will be paid by me :) Also in the case of my death my family is instructed what to do :)
And because it’s her’s if she wants to transfer it and skip the free hosting for whatever reason that is fine.
It’s really not a BIG deal and for everyone knows may be only a marketing ploy for a business I’m announcing Monday that builds site specializing in dominating LOCAL search, oh wrong blog my bad LOL :)
Make sure everyone stops by tomorrow for my 2nd anniversary that would mean a lot to me :) Like to shoot for 100 comments Thanks everyone

Great post John, hardly one I think I should be commenting one, considering I have been MIA lately.
I agree with helping your fellow blogger but I believe sometimes we forget or get to busy with ourselves, lives, etc. (guilty) to remember that blogging is much of a community effort.
I really appreciate this post because it has prompted me to write what I have been swimming in my brain during my absence.

Like Jenny, I’ve not been around much in the last fortnight. It feels like I’ve spent the last few days just paddling like mad to stay afloat, it’s been such a busy time. I’m going to remind myself to come and wish you a Happy Birthday tomorrow but just in case I get distracted again, “Happy Birthday!”

Great post and I of course agree. I wouldn’t be anywhere with the Give A Brick blog if it wasn’t for the help and support we’ve had since January. If you ever feel like holding the hand of a tiny little charity with massive aspirations, you know where to come.

Enjoy the rest of the day and have a great day tomorrow,

First off, congrats on two years, that really is an accomplishment considering the dropout rate in this industry.
And, YES, I think we do owe it to the next generation of bloggers to be good to them. I can name the 2 or 3 people that helped me out when I first started internet marketing and just like you John, those people are still my friends.
I think what people don’t understand is that those new bloggers who are just starting, some of them will make it big also, and if you treat them right, they will be your allies and friends for a long time. ANd as you know, relationships are everything in this business.
The other thing is that those bloggers that don’t make it big, they will still be fans and friends and they are just as important.

I love this post. I truly believe that when someone mixes business with pleasure and thinks you are infringing on something they are doing, a legal disclaimer should be up. Gratuity? Nonexistent, Instead people will have snarky attitudes. With money comes great power, responsibility and stupid attitude.
An open, friendly environment will only attract more positivity.
Which is why I value you and consider you as a friend, because you’ve been nothing but encouraging and friendly as hell!

I try my very best to pay it forward at my Make Money Online blog by sending as many links out to the people that have helped me along the way. I want new people who are searching to make money online to be able to find legitimate honest people who will give from their heart and not get taken in for thousands of dollars by some of the more famous people you here about online.

I really enjoy reading your blog and trying to implement what you are saying, but I get so busy with my other sites that I don’t always have time to respond. Good topic and I am glad to hear that you walk the talk and not just talk.

Hi John,

You already know where I stand on this, but for those who don’t know me yet I will throw in my two cents. Every time we write about another blogger and link to them we get as much or more out of it than they do.

The more we support each other’s efforts the more good we do in the world and the better life will be for us all. I write about that often including in my latest post (in CommentLuv) and two other posts I linked in the bottom of that one.

I would say when it comes to humanity, we shall always be eager to assist, not just in blogging but in all things in life. Don’t treat it as an obligation, but a common practise to give back to the society if we can. Same as blogging, I’ve seen people giving advises, guidance around the blogosphere and that’s great! We all are learning from one another – ask and one shall receive (familiar, isn’t it?) ^^ A help or a service, give it free or charge it for time/expertise, that is really not in our hands to judge others too. Let it be a choice for the consumers to decide whether it worth or not. :-)

To be as generous to offer continuous, ‘unlimited’ service to a new blogger, I must say I haven’t reached there yet. I applaud your effort, John. This can be a blessing for the young lady you mentioned, a good deed. You are really one of a kind. ^^

I don’t see this as an obligation, I like to blog, I also like to interact with others on comment area and forums and if someone needs help, I am more than willing to give some time. But many people take this gesture as a sign of me being ‘free’ :)

Congrats on your blog’s second anniversary.. keep blogging !!
