Affiliate marketing the real basics

by John Sullivan on February 8, 2010 · 30 comments

in bloggers, make money online, san antonio

When I first started blogging I would come across tons of these scam brags ads that wanted your email address and decided there were no REAL ways to make money online.
I went from that apsense spot to these places that if you only answered a survey or click on this or that you’d make money. Well I wanted to include this video because the kid covers some of the basics and I thought there  is no better place to start then at the very beginning.

Affiliate marketing is a tough racket at first and it really takes alot of studying and many losses to get to a point where you will have a nice Christmas :) Last year was awesome and I’m hoping this one is just as good if not better. 2010 is KILLER already
How long have you been in affiliate marketing ? Have any HOT TIPS for everyone ?
Thanks
Next post will have more tips and REAL life experiences :) thanks

Hey John, I’m in need of some pointers for affiliate marketing so this a good one for me. I think that Google has so many tools and tricks that it’s really hard to keep up.
Thanks.

James if we were sitting here together chatting I would tell you exactly what I do to make money but due to the hostile scheming nature of affiliate managers so called Gurus etc I will just say this
IF YOU agree and swear 100% not to tell ANYONE I will set you up to start making money immediately. Since your in the UK and I just noticed on the one site I use they pay UK 60 days net ;P it’s money in the BANK. I could have you making 5000 Gs a month US. No list course, kissing up to GOOFS matter fact we don’t even have to talk much after just watch what happens. Now please be clear I’m not saying this to impress you or any affiliate people because I don’t need to do that not because I could of just not said anything but because I don’t care about money like most people. I care about PEOPLE and Yes I like to see people get PAID but the last guy dissed me and another got me for 500 cash and so on so it gets to hey hang out and blog have some fun and keep all you real BIZNESS to yourself you tried to help a few people and see what happens.. I see no sense in trying to beg someone or keep trying to convince them for ME to help THEM make money I don’t play that game and the GAME is real simple and easy it’s just that you CAN’ T Tell anyone and you won’t be able to split and sell it per se let’s just call it an Unfair Advantage to THEM not YOU :) LOL
Now what do you have to say about that :) Hey that one post about you lead to me meeting some real cool people Thanks :)
send me a THINGY on Yahoo if you use it @jsullivan78227 I really JAM on there :0)

Nice to see a good person like you making money. I used to dabble in affiliate marketing but never did got the hang of it. Maybe someday, I’ll find the patience to try it once again.

Good video by the way, I’ve learned something new today.

You know me, and I am not a “huge” fan of affiliates, but I do use them sparingly, just haven’t been very successful with it, have had much better luck with my own products so far, but you also know I am always open to ideas for making loot, as long as they don’t affect the integrity of my site (like it has any! LOL)

Hello John,
I don’t wanna rain on your parade, as there are some folks who can do really well with click-thrus but here’s what I did instead:

Using the suggestions offered by many folks at DP about “Article Writing,” I came upon a blog called “DJ-Equipment.com” where I became an Equipment Reviewer for DJ equipment (stuff I actually use).

The main income source from this project? I get brand-name gear at Dealer Cost + 10% to cover shipping. Its a really sweet deal! I saved nearly $2000 on my latest Crown-powered JBL loudspeakers (Compared to Guitar Center prices).

In addition, the In-Article hyperlinks for my “wedding dj” site, are going to be very valuable as the dj-equipment blog increases its PR over time. Provided that blog has the proper do follow tags, which my Chrome SEO Quake says are good.

@Matt @ Wedding DJs: Matt you the man when it comes to a DJ SITE
That was a great arrangement I think the word POT kills much of that on here but that’s cool :)
So what does SEO QUAKE say about all your links from here ? They have some weight ?
I was actually missing you not to long ago ;) LOL

I don’t see any lines thru the links, which is always a good thing. If I go to a blog and see crossouts thru all the links, then its “buh bye”.

Keep up the good work!

Couldn’t help but chime in :) Instead of SEO Quake have you tried out Chrome SEO.

I know, I know, I’m probably a little biased…… because I’m developing it ;) But please let me know what you think, I started developing it to meet my own needs but the response has been amazing, we’ve had over 100,000 and due to that I’ve started working on it 8 hours a day.

I have a new version coming out in about 24 hours so please let me know what you think, and if you have any feature requests I’d be glad to add them in.

Affiliate marketing has to be the toughest thing I’ve ever had to learn–and I’ve earned both real estate and Series 7 licenses. However, I’m glad to say that it’s worth the effort!

I like affiliate stuff. I do quite a bit of Amazon; payouts are pretty low, but they sell everything from kitchen sinks to pink boxer shorts, and easy to embed widgets.
I do some health care crap too thru ShareAsale.
The only aff programs I hate are the ones on Pepperjam. Never met anyone who made money with those effers. I sent them arse-loads of traffic and only one sale.. dropped em’ like a bad habit.

Affiliates tend to be successful when the merchant is hands on and working with them to improve the program. For new affiliates I would say, look at the commission level, pay etc but also look at what resources the merchant has in place.

Remember that point when you said you decided there were no ‘real’ ways to make money online? That’s sort of where I am. I enjoy SEO, am pretty decent at it, but gave on the money-making thing a while ago and just focusing on what I enjoy writing about.

But, I’ve thought about affiliate marketing a few times over the last year. Maybe it’s not a bad time to get started after all and give it a shot.
