How to write the most powerful post

The first question for someone who wants to start getting serious about writing posts that accomplish your goals is to know your audience. Bloggers make the mistake of strictly targeting other bloggers and wordpress users. That’s cool and fun but google is going to only bless  that posts with a basic listing in the search index and down deep. Every keyword I want I’m on the first page and often number one that is because that is where I want this site to be for that search. Sure my primary goal is to interact and get to know only the coolest bloggers in the world :) but in order to build power to the site on a whole you have to do somethings that YOU KNOW are successful.

Sometimes I write a post to vent THEY vanish quick, sometimes I write just for Google and they bring me the traffic I want at that moment but they fade quick like my Conan post the other night I knew I was just jumping on the bandwagon.

I wanted to analyze two posts in particular to show you what Google likes and what kind of post will not only rank good but they will stay locked into that search position. Sure it’s cool to see your site number one for a search term because of a post you just wrote but will it stay there ?

As your site evolves you really don’t know what your going to do with it, with all the new apps, plugins, features coming out why not continue to build a powerful site so when your site arrives at it’s destination it will have the JUICE necessary ;)

In my post Topic analysis in terms of Google Page Rank :) Google wasn’t to impressed LOL  but to me that’s an awesome post only because I got some good feedback and comments. So yes it’s all cool and sounds good to say I don’t care about Google Page Rank and Alexa and all that but let’s be honest if your going to get noticed as someone with skills you will have to learn some tricks :)

Now here’s an example of what most bloggers are doing, I link to other bloggers in the post and get many comments and all that but google didn’t give a damn about that post @  http://potpolitics.com/2009/09/06/commenting-and-backlinks/

That is exactly why I like to MIX it up all the time, I don’t want google to pit me into some over saturated niche I want Google to look at this site as a constant source of unique content, notice I didn’t say GOOD :) Sometimes what people consider Good Content is dog shit to me LOL :) I rather read a post from Extreme John or Kristi mixing it up and google backs up what I’m saying.

Now when you look at this post about San Antonio the only thing I would of changed is to try to include the record temperature for all time. That post will sit nice but over time it will fade.

http://potpolitics.com/2009/08/02/san-antonio-breaks-record-100-degree-days/

So I just wanted to share some basic thoughts on looking a post a little differently. I do write for my friends first, when I write I’m speaking to you and then I link to people I like and then I try to think of a title that FITS exactly to what a person is going to search for.

Everyone has their own goals and needs I just like to be honest and say that I think it’s best to mix it up Keep em guessing :)

Then you will have a clear view of what works and what doesn’t like right now who knows how this post is going to do ? But in the meantime hit that RT button LOL :)

If you think that the only reason that Google gives you page rank is because of the number of links to that site your not factoring in the TOPIC and the ones google likes and the ones they don’t ;) Also if your blog is still NO do follow because your a GOOF and can’t see that and that it doesn’t HURT you one bit to transfer page rank then HEY keep doing what your doing :)

Also one of the reasons I check every blog that has left a comment on this blog is because I want your comments link to have some weight and since no one really knows how much weight google actually gives to commenters I at least don’t want your link near any sites I don’t trust or that are shady :)
So does google like the zemanta plugin I use YES, does it let me add tags with one click YES are tags Under rated YES do I follow the tags NO, are categories important ? Only to the interior and cataloging of the site, just like meta tags are useless :)
So be honest what “shady” tactics do you use ? I know You don’t OK LOL

After you leave your awesome DO FOLLOW comment please check out my friend Jenny’s site, she write all about what Blogger like so after you hit that RT Button and BOUNCE check her out thanks LOL :) >> Jenny’s Blog

Thanks for stopping by I do appreciate it :)

I love how you literally do not care about PR at all, yet you still manage to write awesome stuff, get traffic for the keywords you target and get a big fat PR even though you link out left right and center and have dofollow comments!

Going against the grain and succeeding! Awesome.

Hey again John, when ever I wanna find you I log into friendfeed…

I got a lot of comment questions, too many to go on one comment, will start w/ the big one:
There are a lot of WP plugins that regulate dofollow, ppl who “earn it” get link love and the like, I dunno one from the other… I’m running Thesis, so I’m betting there’s a setting for this, to make comments dofollow or nofollow,

Do you recommend a WP plug in to “regulate” who gets DF and who gets NF?
I see KeywordLuv at the bottom of this post (now that I finished the comment, and guess that answers at least one of my questions)

I’m asking you cause I remember a blog post you made a couple months ago re: having too many plugins (perhaps plugins that are deactivated, installed, but deactivated) might slow down your blog or cause other problems. If memory serves my take on it was that having installed but unused plugins was akin to having DLL’s conflict.

You mentioned “zemanta”, am checkin that out… thanks for that too.

I am ALWAYS experimenting with blog posts to see what works and what doesn’t. I think I have a pretty good handle on what Google wants. Usually, however, it is not what my readers want.

If I write pure humor (what my readers want) then Google won’t give me the time of day. It really sucks.

@William
Weird I was going to Twitter you to FIRE a post up Bro :) I was thinking about you and said man I will just have to wait till he snaps out of the love mode :) Like I lost Benny LOL :) then you pop up :) Awesome
@David I use sem-follow it’s fires everything up followed, if you don’t want to transfer page rank to someone don’t approve the comment etc because I have seen sites that are selective and I think it’s kind of dicky to approve my buddies and then not someone elses. You may want to use like a lucia’s link etc that let’s the comments becomes do follow after a number you set like the second comment etc. I don’t approve spam comments to increase the comment number and all that I try to keep it pretty straight this site links to BLOGGERS :) Thanks for stopping by :) Give me a shout on FB or here if you want to work on your backlinks LOL :)

Sometimes you have to write for the Google. Every couple of posts I will write a how to or a top 10 or 7 ways.. type of post, it seems like Google eats that up. It is also good for other bloggers too. You give some great advice about writing for more than just other bloggers, I still have not been able to figure that out on Tycoon Blogger. any suggestions on how I can expand a bit outside the blogging niche but still stay within the niche at the same time??

Thanks John, you wrote:

“if you don’t want to transfer page rank to someone don’t approve the comment”

Now that just makes sense. After reading this post I installed Jr NoFollow, but then looked more closely at the support forum and it seems that plugin does not work with WP 2.9

Did a search within wp-admin/plugins and did not find a “sem-follow”

Is this what you’re talking about: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/sem-dofollow/ ??

Lucia’s Linky Love also is not found within the WP gallery search feature.

So.. if the “/sem-dofollow/ is the one you describe then both sem-dofollow and Linky Love both must be FTP’d up by hand?

if so I’m wondering if the WP powers that be purposely left those 2 plug ins out to deter users from using them?

@David
Your site is do follow in the Comment link URL but not in the box like this site but they way you have it is good for now. I would change the design to two columns one at like 550 and one at 300 or something like that :)

Thanks John, will look into changing the thesis layout to match the 550 / 300
makes sense, I prefer the open look of your layout to mine as it is right now.

So “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” with respect to adding a plug in to manage comment link luv?

Before I asked an ignorant question that I coulda found out from a quick search I found a popular comment plug in (don’t remember which) that said something to the effect of “here’s my comment plug in, I’m not using it anymore because of comment spam, but you guys feel free to use my plugin (the one I’m not using anymore)

what’s that say to us?

Supposedly the best posts are ones written just for your readers / visitors and not for Google. I would assume this is because if you do it right, your visitors will link back to your post, share it socially, etc. and give it lots of Google juice, whereas if it is something your visitors don’t like, it will not get the attention it needs to rank well in SERPs.

I find that the posts I expect to do well don’t, and vice versa, so I’m trying to relax on being so perfect when writing and just letting the information fly.
