http://www.damienriley.com/
I want to thank John for having me as a guest blogger here today. I’ve worked with him in the past and O I love the raw energy of his blog. I am a blogger and a teacher in Southern California. Pleased to meet you. This is a rant of sorts that seeks to inspire people like me. If you are an arduous blogger that wants to make some money in a dark world, this one is aimed at you.
In my opinion, the best blog politic is the one that makes you feel good. Once you get that working, you should try to make money. There are a lot of confused, misled people in between those two mental spaces. Perhaps that describes you. It is certainly how I feel sometimes.
Blog for yourself. Who cares whether you get PageRanked or accepted into 9rules or any other elite platform like that. You should set the pace for what’s to come on your blog. You are the one who will carry your blog, no one else. Don’t pay any allegiance to the powers-that-be who seek to “rank” you. If you have a desire to make posts on your blog in your spare time, do it with zest, vigor, wit and candor … that’s it. You will be a champion.
Ok, I want to thank John for having me as a guest blogger. I read his stuff lately more than ever and I appreciate a place where I can let my hair down, or baldness as it were
.
Making money blogging comes through advertising, period. If you had a public access TV show in your garage would you expect advertisers you bang your door down? Hell no you wouldn’t. Then why do you put Adsense on your blog when you have less that 1,000 uniques a month? I see it all day long when I surf around and blog hop. Don’t wait for the dream check to come, become the kind of blog that is a dream to advertisers!
I use Twitter to have fun and stay the hell away from Facebook. Twitter is a great way to connect with people online. Please feel free to ad me, I am damien_riley there. I would like to follow you as well. More than money, this is about people for me. Having said that, Twitter helps me make momey. Do searches for posts on how you can use Twitter and explore options like Hootsuite. Twitter is amazing. It enabled me to get back in touch with John’s blog after a time. I came and commented and got a direct message from John. He suggested I might guest post and I hope this is acceptable coming from me
I am usually a much more mild mannered voice. Feels good to stretch out. Some things have to be said.
I started blogging in December of 2006 with my fun little platform called “Postcards from the Funny Farm.” It started awesome and for me remains as such. Every day I would run home to learn more about the Wordpress platform and plugins and themes … ahhh the hundreds of hours I’ve spent with themes. At any rate, after a year at it I learned about sponsored posts and started trying those. Another year in, Adsense became interesting. I now make as much as $400 regularly through 4 blogs and one podcast. I aim to triple that in 2010. To the idiots that have treated me like a second rate writer and blogger I enjoy being able to put that info out there. I have a professional job and professional teaching blog. I don’t need to make money blogging but I have dined at every restaurant in town from Outback to Johnny Carinos ALL ON BLOG MONEY. It be sweet folks.
If people like John and I get networked with people like you, there are no frontiers that can stop us from making money blogging as we change the industry. It’s not easy money but if you love writing and you have tenacity, it is definitely possible for you. John’s been talking about success in blogging and I love the energy in his words. It keeps me coming back. I wrote this post in that spirit. So as I close, I give you this questions: Like they might say at a card table: “Dude, are you in?”

I once guest posted on this blog and it was through John’s generosity and support for genuine bloggers. John is a good influence to bloggers even though scrumbags may despise him.
Hat’s off to John for a great blog and for being a true blogger. You’re one lucky guy to have this spot.
Good job to you as well. Will follow you on Twitter soon.

Thanks M. I need to read my feeds more often. Sometimes I get too caught up in fussing under the hood and need to just drive the car. Potpolitics is on my Google reader and I always get pumped up when I read it. Thanks for your comment, I agree I was lucky to guest blog. Hope to catch up with you down the line.

LOL at the timethief comment. I will give her this: she’s smart but has zero social skills and blogging is a social medium. ‘Nuff said.

Great story, Damien. Perseverance does pay off. There are only two ways to lose at almost anything: run out of time or quit. We can’t a;ways control time, but we can sure not quit. Your earnings are proof that you have the stick-to-it-ness necessary.
I checked out your blog, too. Good content, but I expected that since John is implicitly recommending you. He hasn’t let me down yet.

Hmmm. are there any particular prerequisites for writing guest posts on Potpolitics?
just curious..
Anyway, good words Damien, especially on the subject of writing what you love and enjoy.. Passion has always gotta be the driving force, otherwise what’ll motivate us to get over the bumps?

Yes and there are bumps indeed! The hardest thing for me is when I mentor someone new and after a couple weeks they are like, “When can I make money.” It’s like knitting a fishing net. It doesn’y make any sense to throw it in the water until it’s big enough to get something. It can be bumpy even after you start making bucks.
Thanks for your comment. People should know that I actually have 4 blogs and a podcast. It takes all of them for me to make the figure mentioned above. Having said that, some make more than others. Right now my teaching blog is my biggest earner. You can find them all linked at http://www.rileycentral.net/

Hi Damien,
Really appreciate your honest words. You are succesful because you love what you’re doing and that’s what a lot of people don’t understand…they see blogging and other similar tools as a get rich quick scheme and start posting all kinds of stuff that don’t make sense to them or have no use to anyone. Anyway keep at it and I hope to see more from you soon!
