Personally, I like Google Analytics to find out that no one is on my website ;-).

I know from experience that you can sell a site making $5 a day in adsense for a few grand tops, for what its worth....

From above:

"I was always fascinated why people idolize certain people. One thing I know is that most of the people that are in the IN CROWD lack basic skills like saying Thank you etc."

This is interesting - I'm curious to hear more about this.

My own experience with celebrities and big-name bloggers is that they're pretty stuck-up for the most part, although I met a few on Twitter who were really down to earth (Karl Rove was super nice, as was Kate Havnevik).

I suspect bloggers are less down-to-earth than real celebrities, because bloggers have a chip on their shoulder: make it big blogging and you're still virtually unknown to the wider world. But like everything I've said in this comment, that's a guess.

Stats programs can be great but you can also get too bogged down in follow the numbers rather than getting on with the conversation.

Just look at the comments and you will know whether or not your blog is succeeding - and yours certainly is :)

Oh I think the Sidewiki will be interesting.
Let the turf wars begin!
Christians vs Atheist ( & everyone else that is different).
Pro Lifers vs Right to Choice.

And I could list the many other radical groups that will start blasting sites in the wiki.

Other places have tried the Sidewiki type thing & gotten nowhere. With G promoting this one it could get a bit of traction. I bet it will be more trouble to G than it is worth.

As for the big G - do not expect any PR from their sites. Even their Knol site you have to wait & 'earn' a dofollow link. G says that they know people want PR from them so, they pretty much never give it.

You NEVER see a DoFollow link from YouTube. Youtube itself ranks high but, G does not share it.

Oh, I am just so not wearing my rose colored glasses today. LOL

Congrats on making it in Kristi's Fetching Friday again. You mentioned you're fascinated why people idolize certain people. I idolize my friends that I can socialize with a little. It makes no sense to follow everyone that doesn't know you exists.

I'll check out the sidewiki now. I see it actually shows on the site so others can see it too. I hope you are enjoying the San Antonio weather this weekend, sounds like Michigan.

One of the issues worth thinking about is: what do decent web metrics look like?

I know what I want web metrics to do: I want them to tell me that even despite traffic fluctuations, I'm making progress in building links / increasing visibility of the blog, and that past efforts (i.e. getting entries dugg or mixxed, or being on Stumbleupon) haven't been lost entirely to time.

The fact is that most web metrics are really discouraging, and don't give solid advice on what one can do to improve. The "here's how much your blog is worth" thing is almost a laughable corrective to that problem: I know for myself, you couldn't pay me to do what I do online - what I want is that much more.

I can safely say re: responding to comments on the blog, even compliments - I just can't get to all of them and give everyone the attention I would like to give.

I think this though: if people promote my stuff and I don't give a thanks of some sort, then I'm definitely at fault and don't deserve the attention I get. I know it's going to be a lot harder to give appropriate praise as the blog gets bigger, but still, I do hope once things get going I can find some way of helping everyone who helped me out.

Actually, now that I think about it, "dofollow" and "commentluv" are probably good enough. Just hope people take advantage.

I don't place much credibility in those valuation sites, but they DO provide a measuring stick to show your relative progress (vs. previous period).

Google continues to provide innovation and value to the Web, I'm always amazed how much stuff they give away for free!

A blog's value to me with these tools is not measured in dollars but it does feel good when you start to pull away from 500 bucks :)
I only like stats to see what works and what doesn't :)
I went MONTHS without checking analytics :) But true a blog is only as good as the people that visit :) SO thanks
