Well like everyone I’m sure I have been trying to make sense of the hot health care debate. I have been wavering back and forth on my own personal feelings about the issue.
Our health is the most important thing we have without that we have nothing. I haven’t been to the doctor in years and I don’t have health insurance.
The Republican Party makes me sick, instead of adding some fiscal guidance they are doing nothing but attacking the President and the issue. I hope everyone remembers these fools when it comes time to vote them out. The President needs to be more clear on what exactly his plan will entail. I don’t know why Americans get bent out of shape when dealing with nationalizing health care. You don’t bitch when your mail comes everyday.
Nationalizing health care would be a good thing. Americans have been exploited by all these health care companies for to long.
When a country always has money for BOMBS and F-22’s they have money for LIFE ?
The only reason we don’t have health care is politics and corruption.
Do you have health care ? I just asked a friend from Canada to hopefully write us a REAL scoop on Canadian health care. I know I’m tired of seeing that lady from Canada dogging her own country as all these commercials are in heavy rotation. I’d like to know who is really behind all these commercials.
So are you for or against a public option ie Government sponsored health care ?
DO you have health insurance ? What DO YOU THINK ?

Also people in Congress are SUPPOSED to be there to REPRESENT OUR INTEREST not any companies that pay their campaign funds etc, also they get the best medical treatment in the world why shouldn’t we all ? They say the negatives as far as cost. I see JOBS and people entering the health care field.This could be perfect 
If we can’t invest in LIFE what do we have really ?

Years ago, my dad broke his hip in the states when he was snowbirding there, and it seemed quite evident that the quality of health care – to fix the hip – was much more evident than over here. However, after-healthcare/sales-service sucked. In as much as there wasn’t any. They hospitals kicked him out of there in under 10 days after the hip replacement back to Canada. Insurance couldn’t afford the high-priced doctors you have!~
Canada is good for that – long-term care sitting around, healing. As for actual doctor care, there is a shortage as far as I know and see and everybody is on a waiting list. If you need knee surgery, or MRI, or other vital scan .. you have probably been waiting for a few years or, in a serious accident or dying.
Personally, I’m with comfort that there is govt health care if I need to see a doctor. But, I don’t go often if at all. I dread physicals. I am covered on my wife’s work spousal plan and still disappointed that only 80% of my dental and limitation on my eye care health and glasses is also at a percentage .. I mean – to me, at this stage in my life – dental care and eyecare is the only health care I seek and wish was also free (but it’s not)

I was thinking we can NOT compare the US to any country because it is unlike any country. We have millions of smart young people that will need JOBS. Let them be doctors. People are getting old and Health care is already a HUGE industry. If we have money to send people to space to fuck around we have money to nationalize health care 100%. We won’t have to wait Americans want shit fast they won’t wait.
As far as money we all know when we need money we just print some more so what is the big deal ? That there’s companies USELESS parasitic corporations that screw people let’s screw them back and put them out of business.

When my husband worked at the place with the clown we had medical coverage. That was a very long time ago and apparently they give it to you if you’re a parent and so poor you can’t pay for rent. When my husband made $20,000 they took it away. We could potentially make more and have that nice shiny health insurance if I trusted other people with my children. I trust no one with my children.
I haven’t seen a doctor since the birth of my last child two years ago. I didn’t even go to a postnatal check up they took my pregnancy coverage away before my check up.
Something needs to be done. This shouldn’t happen in the land of the free. We are supposed to have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness but that only applies to you if you are wealthy and don’t have to worry about anything.

Well I can speak to Canadian Health Care!
I have an issue with my stomach! It simply feels like it’s bruised!
I went to the walk in clinic because my free doctor is actually on vacation.
The Doctor there set up 2 appointments for me!
1. An ultrasound
2. Upper GI test
For the record I’m not paying anything! I have to wait 2 weeks for the test which might be a little long but again I’m not gong to go bankrupt.
The point is I’m going to get help, it’s free, the quality is great and everyone in Canada gets this treatment when they need it.
I really like our system. We have waiting time complaints but come on it’s free.

I don’t see the toolbar ExtremeJohn mentioned, but I figure it’s because of my noscript plugin for Firefox.
I think that there should be public healthcare, but people who want to pay private insurance companies so that they can see the doctors they want to can do that as well. I have heard that is the big problem – under private healthcare, you don’t get the choice of who you want to see. So let people have which ever one they want, just like you can pick PPO or HMO for most insurance plans.

I think the problem is that people do not trust obama as much as they did before. He has not been transparent at all and people are afraid that this is going to cost them a ton of money. AS somebody who is in the highest tax bracket, I am not looking to pay any more taxes than I already do. I pay for my own health care and I do not feel like paying for someone elses. If that makes my greedy or a bad person…oh well…that;s just the way I feel.

Ok, well let me start off by saying that I typically avoid the public political debates and discussions, because as an educator, it’s important for me to stay neutral, (and for the most part) not to offend… here is where I am about to put in my 2 cents, and not give a darn who it offends…
A few years ago, I was a teacher’s aide in a public school. I made very little income (we’re talking under $2,000 a month- working full time). Now, one would think, that working in a public school (which pretty much means that you’re working for the state), would entitle you to decent benefits. I was shocked to find that my health care cost nearly $700 per month for myself and my children (and that’s because I chose the low-end plan). I was dollars away from qualifying for federal assistance, yet my healthcare cost almost as much as I made monthly. What’s worse, my coverage was only 80%, and I still had deductibles/co-pays.
Should we have public health care? I think so. I learned (the hard way) early on that if you have children, healthcare is a MUST. I don’t know about every part of the country, but where I come from, Child Protective Services will crawl up your ass for just about anything (I know that they are this way NOW, because they got in so much trouble for not doing their jobs for so long), and not being able to take a sick child to a doctor or hospital immediately is the same as being negligent.
I now have a much higher-paying job, and don’t mind paying for my ridiculously overpriced healthcare, because I know that I can afford to take my kids to the doctor AND buy groceries (before, it was a tough choice that had to be made). If it means that I have to contribute to other people’s healthcare, well, then so be it. Don’t get me wrong- it’s easy to have the attitude that I scraped and pulled myself out of that hole through HARD work and major determination- people in that same situation could do the same… but I just hate thinking about those people who may be in the situation that I once was in…(do we eat, or do we take the baby to the doctor?). Some people never go to the doctor… but for some people, this is a basic need (imagine having a child with a chronic condition).
Now, as for Obama, his intentions and ability to do what’s best for the country… all we can do is wait and see (and remember that he is just a man – the world wasn’t created in one day, and all our nation’s problems can’t be solved in a day either).

We have Kaiser Permanente (www.kp.org)……one of the highest rated HMOs in the country. Only the Guggenheim Foundation and Mayo Clinic health plans have better track record, according to Time magazine article.
When the government takes over the health care industry, the Kaiser model will most likely be used in terms of how the benefits are structured.
We are very happy with Kaiser, but our family rarely gets sick. The coverage is provided thru my wife’s employer.

For once, I must disagree with you. I think the whole idea of government healthcare is a mistake. Despite its problems and they are signficant, the healthcare system in the US is pretty damn incredible provided you have money of course. When a Canadian’s dog can get an MRI faster than a human being where do they come? Have you read about the horror stories in Britain and the extent they attempt to ration care while witholding potentially life saving treatments? Here’s some interesting reading:

So you don’t misunderstand me, I think that a basic standard of care should be the right of every American provided they want it and Emergency Rooms and Clinics while helping out alot are not enough to solve the problem of the uninsured. What I object to in the Obama plan is a government option which directly competes with the private sector which I believe will result in a single payer system.
Even the system as proposed will bankrupt the country if the 23 trillion dollar bailout hasn’t done so already. My guess is to the extent that this sets us further on the road to becoming a poorer, more debt ridden, maybe even third world country, the effect will be to never achieve the lofty health care vision Obama promises. Care WILL be rationed. Your government will decide whether you live or die and you will be abdicating your rights as an individual to a centralized authority that doesn’t give a shit about you.
I’m sorry John, but America is different for a reason and if you change the premise of our society things will be different too. I agree Americans want stuff fast, but they won’t get it and this genie we will never be able to shove back in the bottle.
I want all American taken care of. If you want the government to step in directly and insure the uninsured have at it, but stay focused on the problem and don’t wreck the rest of the system while your at it.
In the Hippocratic Oath one of the fundamentally tenants which has underlined medicine practically forever is to do no harm. When it comes to health care reform, I wish it were part of the Government’s oath of office as well.

While my sister and I were going over some of my mom’s papers (she just died a week ago)…we almost cried when we saw how much of her pension check was going for healthcare (almost 25%!)
That is ridiculous! Seniors have more health concerns than others and as a country, we should at least make provisions for them not to have to spend high monthly insurance premiums, and they should receive their prescriptions at a cut rate. My mother often called me telling me she was broke now because she didn’t have anymore money after she paid her bills.
Personally, I don’t have a problem with government sponsored health care. You see, living in Detroit all my life, we had easy access to Canada, by way of Windsor. So, that meant we could sneak across the border and purchase prescription medicines over the counter. But, you always had to worry about getting caught by the border police.
This is America, we shouldn’t have to do this.
It doesn’t matter how much money I make in this life, I will always, always help those who are less fortunate. If God blesses me enough to be wealthy as @Tycoon Blogger, then as scripture says: “To whom much is given, much is expected.” Its not going to hurt one bit to give a little extra to make sure everyone can afford to go to the doctor.
Receiving adequate, competent medical care should be as natural as breathing in the United States.

I’m a Canadian from the province of Quebec (French speaking community). Responding to your post about health care, we had free Health Care for more than 35 years and I’m sure glad we have it.
The way the system works is the funding is done via taxes. We have the PST (Provincial Sales Tax) where almost everything is taxed (7.5%) and we have the GST (Federal Goods and Services Tax) where we pay 7%.
Everybody that has a card has the right to free health care. It’s great but as with everything that is Free, some people will abuse the system. If you have to go to the emergency for any reason, your case will be evaluated and don’t be surprised if you have to wait for 6-8-10 or even 12 hours to get treated. On the other hand it has created a very large shortage of doctors and nurses.
In my case, I live very close to the Province of Ontario and they pay their nurses $15- $20K/year more than what they get paid in the province of Quebec. So it’s tough to keep are nurses.
To conclude, everybody should have access to health care. It will create abuse but if limiters are in place to weed out the “abusers” it has a very good chance at succeeding.
Obama’s main points of what he wants with health care are great. However, it doesn’t have to be run by the government. It can be ran by non profit health care services that will in the end lower costs. Government cannot handle health care or anything else in that matter. The United States was found under the innovation of people. People have been getting lazy and there is more to come with this new mind set in government.

I am an American currently living in Canada. Over the years I have had the luxury of a great government run health care system. The reactions I am seeing from the republican party is sickening. I don’t see how you can find any negative in providing health care to your people. It’s absolutley embarrassing. And somehow the republicans try and make president Obama to be the bad guy. And all this socialist talk, are you kidding me? A little structure is exactly what we need, compared to no structure of the last administration. Do the republicans forget that the policies, or lack of, brought the U.S., world economy, to its knees, and yet, they don’t want change. Will you people please pull your head out of your @$$. For example, my dad almost cut his finger off. We went to the hospital with his health card and nothing more. We were seen in 15 minutes and his finger was saved. People, government run health care is not socialism, it’s structure to help the American people. Would you as a parent let your children run the streets free, at any hour,in any neighborhood? Probably not, because structure is necessary. Lastly, I pay twice as much in taxes in Canada than in the U.S. The top percent will be footing the bill so stop your whining if its not coming out of your income. You republicans are an embarrassment world-wide and you people make us look bad. The Obama administration is a breath of fresh air compared to the previous so-called leader. Bush didn’t keep us safe. We were attacked on 911 on his watch. We were not supposed to wage war in Iraq, it was Afghanistan remember? Therfore, you did not keep us safe, every American death in Iraq was the fault of the Bush administration. Bush/Cheney/Republicans, you didn’t keep us safe. Republicans, you are the PROBLEM.

Well let’s get rid of some miss information that seems to be going around about the Canadian Health Care System. Well over 90% of people love it. Is it perfect? No. Is any health care system perfect? not a chance. I live in the most right wing area in our country (Alberta). There was a poll on the news the other day that asked if it would be ok to look into some privatization of our system. In and around 50% of the people said it was just ok to look at some privatization options that some other working public systems use (obviously not the system the US uses). That obviously leaves 50% that don’t even want to talk about any privatization. I suspect that figure is considerably higher in most other areas of Canada.
People of the United States start doing you own research and don’t listen some the crap you are getting fed
