link-building

Granted we all like to think we know about a topic but admitting that you could use some advice on link building isn’t going to kill you .
logo
So I will outline and detail each kind of link, which ones you can do yourself, which ones are free and the power of various links.

This article has nothing to do with do follow vs no follow.

If your going to be serious about building links and I’m not. The first step is to develop a keyword strategy depending on your goals and what you want to attach your site to. Now the first link and everyone knows is social bookmarking to all the various lame sites. I want to glance over the lower level ones and get right to the meat.

In the short time that I have been blogging I have seen the power of directories come and go. You can bounce right over to TECHJAWS and use Frank’s awesome list of resources.

The only one that I will recommend on this level of links is aboutus.org. The staff is really cool and they love bloggers. I mention that because it has a powerful  wiki like spot  and I did some editing that if they were lame they would of changed it. I spoke my peace and they respected that. I personally  don’t waste  time with lame directories like DMOZ and Blogcatalog where the staff and links are worthless, just saying.

Now we want mega backlinks so what to do? You can do some of  that article marketing which if you have patience and play well with others can bring back big gains in the link department. But we want bigger and better and we want them for free. Many sites that have page rank over 5 paid for it. When you see Google look the other way when they sell  so called SPONSORS followed links you know that there is a human demention to the old Google Bot’s Serps. Google can decide whether you will be popular or not. They don’t admit HUMANS check out your site but they do and they adjust Page rank accordingly.

It’s all a game and I felt pretty cool when I had a PR 4 I felt like a damn LT.

But to me the people that come by here are more important to me then Google so I squander much of my so called JUICE but Google knows what time it is.

If you can play the blogging  game right you can start having your work reflect the type of person that is going to be asked to write Guest Post. This is a very powerful ways of getting TONS of backlinks, visitors all that. This blog has along way to go to really benefit another bloggger. But If I talked John Chow into letting me write about some lame make money post this site would explode.

To be honest I’m going to stop there. I want to tell you afew facts that I have learned about blogging and bloggers and I will add to the linking post next time. The most powerful blogging link and tool is another blogger.

Earlier today in the mist of daydreaming I saw myself giving away 7 spots to my company to my closest blogging friends. I was of course reminding them HOW I always told them I was going to pull it off.

Today I just felt really grateful about a few people that I know are following my journey and I’m likewise. The most powerful link is you and that other person. I have been fortunate over time to speak with them on the phone, it’s no coincidence that you see the same people sticking together, because I believe basically we’re all good people when it’s all said and done. The ratio of people you have to meet vs the ones that will become true allies is like 1000 to 1.  Some I believe I would of had to literally meet 1 million people to find that one. Sounds weird but it’s true.

This post was inspired because I came across the crazy amount of backlinks a blogger friend of mine has going to her site. I had to really give her credit because sure bookmarking and hustling links is easy but linking to sites HIGHER then you takes some skill and that’s right where I’m going to begin in the HOW to get powerful links to your site in the next post.

We will start right with the Art of the Linkbait which I don’t do personally LOL but I will show you how :)

current  number of links to this site

11,197 I need like 50,ooo more :)

A great place to get do followed links easy and support from a real blogger who is a real person and will go out of his way to help you out

I try my best to link to as many sites as possible by emailing them, exchanging links and so on.

Backlinking plays an important role to some extent and everyone knows that. DoFollow and NoFollow does not matter now as Google will follow the link in any case.

It is true it doesn’t matter do follow or not because every link counts. I love to comment on blogs that interest me no matter they do follow or not.

Ok ok we’ll have to see what we can do to get some votes on this article! We have many blogengage members commenting here lets see if we can get them to vote! Surprisingly enough it’s actually pretty hard to encourage bloggers to vote for each other.

Vote for others and they will vote for you!

DMOZ is hardcore! I have been trying to get listed for like a year now and nothing happened yet. Building back links is a long and draining process. The only advice I can give to stop wasting your time on no follow communities like blogcatolog! They are extremely greedy and share nothing.

I always suggest the DO FOLLOW NO FOLLOW Fire Fox plug-in. It’s a great tool to determine if a link is do follow or no follow.

Look don’t get me wrong I still comment on no follow blogs it’s just nice to know what they are doing with the love juice.

Hey John you shoudl stop bye our blog forum sometiem and say hello! Woudl be too cool to have you hanging out!

p.s. dugg, stumbled, mixxed, buzzed and Engaged!

DMOZ is difficult to get into, but its a great source of links (once your site is admitted). Many directories used “cloned” ODP (Open Directory Project) data, which is copied from DMOZ.

I also recommend Digital Point as a good source of links, although recently DP got knocked down by Google from PR 6 down to PR 4.

As always some excellent information from the big man on campus, I like my strategy of just writing and linking things when I feel like it. Seems to make life more comfortable for me and it fits my site well.

I do plan on attacking the Bulldog niche here shortly though and you can bet I will be following some of these practices.

well link building is par and partial of SEO and even many believe that 70% of SEO is link building… it seems pretty true when you look at the Google Top ten result and analyse them, Follow of No follow is a debate which will stay with us for some time….

well written article

Loved this post John!

Things keep changing (like Mixx did recently). It’s getting harder and harder to gain PR these days (I’m down to a 3 now as well).

I wonder what would happen if Google stopped disregarding nofollow links in determining pagerank. So many great links are off limits for PR simply because some site owner is trying to keep his juice. That’s wrong.

I can’t remember how many times I applied and submitted my sites at DMOZ .. and then a year later come back and couldn’t find them. I just don’t spend time linking and backlinking as I should. As much as I’ve always hated Technorati (and still do) I’ve still followed their backlink philosophy … You may have been at the top of the world 6 months ago but you could be shit now. Let face, I’d rather people recognize me and say something like …

“Oh! Look at HART and how many people link to him!”

rather than ..

“oh – Poor HART. He had Soooo many backlinks and NOW look at him :(

“I personally don’t waste time with lame directories like DMOZ and Blogcatalog where the staff and links are worthless, just saying.”

You should. DMOZ is a quality resource (hell, it’s always the first thing I do when SEO’ing a site is checking & submitting it to DMOZ), it’s held as a very high regard, and with good reason – they don’t let any old crap in! I do think people who complain about DMOZ generally had trouble getting accepted in a different life (well, site).

I do agree with you regarding that list you listed, some of those links are worthless submission though (I mean, Boingboing? It’s a blog!)

Certainly something we could all to a better job of, or at least I could. I think what keeps people from building high quality backlinks is that it does take some time, and that is of the essence for most of us. But as you point out the benefits are numerous and I think we’d find it was worth it if we put the time in.

Nice article,

I have to back up what Matt (Small Biz Bee) just said. It was on the tip of my tongue (or fingertips, typing… as it were) when I read his comment. Creating links DOES take time and effort! That’s a given.

But that’s what I LOVE about building blogs and sites from scratch. I’d say that about 85% (maybe higher) of people WANT to have great page rank and lots of backlinks but fail to put in the effort. It leaves the door open for dedicated people that are SERIOUS about creating great blogs, and businesses, to do well. If creating backlinks were easy, everyone would be doing it.

The time I spend sprinkling meaningful links around the web benefits my site and I love to see my link numbers grow as I move up the Google food chain. Is it a pain in the ass sometimes? SURE. But it’s worth every minute I dedicate to it.

Appreciate your effort to tell us about the linking !i have some points for the visitors ,i dont know whether this is a complex one or simpler but i would like to mention it & that is for the linking ,As you said —–we have to first make a keywords strategy because the all game is around the keywords ,so for linking any website such as a website of medicines if we link it to the other various sites of different categories we will get the good amounts of the backlinks but this is only the quantity but what about the quality ?I mean if we try to link our site (such as of medicine) to the same category’s sites along with the other site of different categories then it will be a quality as well as quantity matter for the site !hence the website ill be good benefited than the others!

Yeah DMOZ is pretty lame. I think it’s been a year and they haven’t even added my blog there yet

I should have tried writing a guest post on popular blogger’s blog in hope to get a good backlink. But wouldn’t the link goes to the guest post rather than my blog?

You are so right that the best links come from other bloggers. I started my travel site just under 6 months ago. Last month I saw a PR2 on the home page and pr1 on the blog. Kind of amazing that it got pr in such a short time. But I do believe it was because of networking with other bloggers.
Directory Links like the ones on Frank’s list are great, but don’t under estimate the power of blog links. Variety is a great thing.

Excellent post on building and getting back links. Yes its true many people try to get as much back link as possible as you said over a period of time one may create its own niche identity and getting a guest column written by such popular people will help you get even more popular.Only getting is not important, what i think is that getting a backlink on the sites which can actually get you some visitor is more important. But as some said “any kind of advertising is good ” so be it :)

Brian made a good point here. “…it’s pretty hard to encourage bloggers to vote for each other”

The simple reason for that is fear that by voting for others your own site will drop off the first page (BlogEngage) and will lose exposure as a result.

Now thinking along those lines is the problem for many bloggers. They simply don’t think of the wider picture. If you comment on all of the blogs BEFORE you vote on them you increase your own exposure and build your credibility (providing you write something engaging and relevant)

Too many people see everything as one way. “What can I do to get people to my blog”

Work hard at helping other and reciprocity comes into play. You’ll be amazed at the benefits you receive.

11K links is very good. If you had 20 keyword links _from sites Google respects_ , to a reasonably optimised page, you could could probably rank for almost any phrase, right now, I think.

On your comment about PageRank5+ sites being paid for. I think you are right to an extent. There are a lot of commercial sites that are boosting their PR with a load of paid links. However, on the other hand, I have kept my link building pretty close to Google guidelines and have made a vow not to spend any money on advertising of any form. So no paid links for me. Then there are plenty of sites that get high PR naturally, like php.net.

Re. the directories. I have heard that there are a number of directories that Google uses to influence rankings in some of their newer search platforms like Local Business Centre and Products. Not sure if that is correct, but there are quite a few people in search who have posted it.

Well, if Micheal Jackson had thought ahead like you – maybe he would…Oh that would not be nice to say. ;)

As you were out link building, I bumped into you at Kikolani so it’s not all just in raising your site in the SERP’s but, also just having strangers find you.

As far as link baiting – that would probably get me in a heap of trouble. Maybe 1 day I will give it a whirl.

Nice meeting you & I will take a look around to see what other helpful tips you have posted here.

I’ve been slowly building my backlinks which has actually been both beneficial to my blog and to finding new blogs to read.

I try to give helpful comments or at least voice my opinion.

As much as I’d love to see more traffic to my blog, I think the benefit of trying to get backlinks has been interacting with other bloggers and reading some really amazing posts.

I gotta get better about getting focused backlinks – I’m not really matching up comments with links to posts with relevant keywords. In fact, my general feeling is “just get some attention first,” and then worry about getting search engines to target my posts properly.
