No, I am not going to tell you how to increase your number of followers, how to get yourself retweeted hundreds of times and how to get people to click on your affiliate links. I will talk about how twitter has changed mindset of a normal person who didn’t click on affiliate links earlier.
There was a time when tinyURL, d95 and many URL shortening services were almost explicitly being used by internet marketers to dupe people in clicking on their affiliate links. Some of these URL shortening sites also offered custom URLs and thus made these look all the more natural. But people soon became wiser and URL shorteners – especially tinyURL was banned from many webmaster / internet marketing forums (digitalpoint even has it in their rules).
Twitter has changed the game, the whole internet generation is suddenly not suspicious about clicking shortened URLs from unknown people. Earlier I almost never clicked on such links if they were not sent by a friend. With twitter, peoply only see short URLs and don’t mind clicking on them.
Affiliate marketers can now feel free to go back to their old ways and though many people still won’t click on their links, a lot of them wouldn’t even hesitate in doing so because they click on such shortened URLs 10 times a day on twitter.
With digg and stumbleupon (su.pr) also joining URL shortener frenzy I won’t be surprised if some people simply stop using ‘normal’ URLs. I am yet to see a web directory with shortened URLs but it might soon become a trend that Internet marketers can benefit from.
Twitter has also given us “trends” so I can see some smart internet marketers benefiting from that, but this post was only about revival and general acceptance of URL shorteners.
When he is not online clicking on twitter URLs, Jeet manages directory submission company GetLinksPro.
