No one comments on my blog? What can I do?

No one comments on my blog? What can I do?

You have a blog and you post some really great content on the blog but no one ever reads it, if they do they rarely leave a comment. Does it feel like you are talking to yourself? Turning your blog to dofollow blog can change that.
I will first describe the pros and cons of changing your blog to dofollow blog and then discuss other methods that could be used to increase participation in your blog.
More backlinks: With a dofollow blog, you become qualified to get listed in all those dofollow directories and dofollow lists. That automatically means more backlinks for your blog.

No one comments on my blog? What can I do?
More traffic: You write about technical analysis (for example), a great topic that requires knowledge and experience in finance industry but noone will ever find your blog in google search because there are 94,800,000 results for that keyword, allintitle:technical analysis results are no less daunting at 750,000. If you make your blog dofollow, a lot of webmasters in your niche will use dofollow blog search engines and they will find you because you are now only competing against a smaller subset.
More backlinks and traffic will result in a search engine ranking boost as well as help you increase participation on your blog.
You should reward your readers for commenting on your blog, giving a dofollow link back to their homepage is a good reward. I will also discuss other methods that encourage commentators to leave a feedback, you are welcome to suggest methods that you have used successfully on your blogs.
Some would say, I was talking to myself before, if I change my blog to dofollow, I will be talking to robots with names like “make money”, “hotels in las vegas” or “cheap via**a”. No, you won’t before you turn your blog to a dofollow blog, make sure you have activated akismet on your blog, it’s an excellent blog spam filter. I would also like to point out that if your blog is popular, it doesn’t matter if it’s dofollow or nofollow, you are bound to get spam; these are bots, they don’t care about your blog being dofollow or nofollow, they will rather leave a comment on all blogs rather than trying to find out dofollow blogs.
Now that we have covered one method of getting people to comment on your blog posts, here are some more methods.

  1. Install keywordluv plugin, so that your visitors can leave their names but still get a backlink with anchor text.
  2. Install commentluv plugin, that’s the most intelligent plug-in I have seen and it encourages people with blogs to comment because they can showcase their latest blog posts.
  3. Install Top Commentator plugin, this will definitely increase visitor loyality because they will keep coming back to post more comments.
  4. Blog about your top commentator, take some time out, visit your top commentator’s sites or blogs and write a small post about their business and thank them for being an active part of your blog community.
  5. Ask your visitors about their opinion on the topic of post. Most readers just visit the blog, read the tips and go away, you should call them to action by soliciting their feedback or responses on the topic.
  6. Switch to disqus, intensedebate or wordpress’s threaded comments – why do you think livejournal blogs and slashdot became so popular, one of the reasons was that they allowed visitors to respond to each other’s comments with ambiguity.
  7. Encourage people to subscribe to followup comments via e-mail so that they can contribute to discussion.
  8. Last but one of the most important points, approve comments fast and respond to them.

These are some of the methods I have used in past to increase participation on my blogs, I would love to hear from you about methods you use.

Another reason people don’t comment is when the “Subscription Feed” for that blog site is faulty.

For example, this blog’s feed takes up to ONE WEEK before the e-mail arrives, notifying me of a new post. Many commenters rely on these e-mails before visiting a site.

In my case, being an avid reader of this fine blog — I see the new posts usually within 24 hours of their going online.

But for others, the delayed feed *could* mean less readers and comments.

I need to make my travel blog do follow. I want to put one of those pluggins on that requires a minimum number of comments before the do follow is turned on. Which ought to deter the once and done comments.
What are the thoughts on those types of pluggins? good? bad?

@Mark: Yes you have a good point, people often subscribe to blogs when they like a couple of posts. I hope John will be able to fix his RSS feed soon.

@John: Isn’t that stating the obvious.. “DC is a Dick” ;-)

Great tips, thanks a lot for sharing, actually since I used CommentLuv and started to write a list of blogs using comment lists and I am getting good number of comments!

These are definitely good tips. And it’s true… you’ll get spammers whether you are DoFollow or not. You may feel like you are luring people in with those plugins, but at the same time, you may also convert DoFollow seekers into regular readers and commenters with your content and interaction.

I’ve seen a lot of bloggers discontinue their dofollow experiments. The reason of course is comment spam (like this one? lol). I wish there’s a WP plugin which can eliminate comment spam made by bots. How about captcha? Can they beat that too?

Hi
I think they discontinue it because they are selfish and deep down SUCK LOL:)
or they get a LITTLE traffic think their all that and think man I’m going to get a PR6 I better turn it OFF:)
I rather have a PR3 and share then a 6 and be a dick like you see all to well :)
A little spam never killed no one :)
One mans spam is another man’s steak :)

Many people run after PR and giving dofollow links in comments is a PR leak for them. I am more concerned about building a community getting my voice and ideas heard and making money from my knowledge and hence encourage going dofollow.

Captcha helps with spam but Akismet is good enough. CommentLuv folks are also planning some spam prevention measures in their next version.
